In Icelandic, the day is known as Þjóðhátíðardagurinn. June 17th was chosen not only because it marks the founding of the republic of Iceland in 1944, but also because it is the birthday of Jón Sigurðsson, a key figure in Iceland’s 19th-century independence movement and a symbol of the nation’s journey toward independence.
Today, Iceland’s National Day is celebrated with parades, cultural events, and festivities across the country and in Icelandic communities around the world.
